WSTA Transit Survey
  • Welcome!

We are proposing updates to our bus network to help more people get where they need to go faster. These service changes include faster travel times, new and modified routes, route eliminations, and microtransit in some areas.

We need to hear from you to make sure these changes will work!

    The Plan:

    ⏱️ Run our most popular routes more often! These routes would run every 30 minutes: Routes 81, 86, 89, 92, 93, 96, 103, 105

🎯 Make routes more direct! These routes would cut a few stops to complete their trips faster: Routes 87, 93, 104

🚗 Test out a new Microtransit Zone to replace Route 97. Microtransit works like a rideshare service. WSTA will provide on-demand, door-to-door service in parts of Northwest Winston-Salem.

⛔ Discontinue some less popular Routes:
    82, 88, 97, 101, 102, 108, 109

💸 Introducing WSTA-X, your premier job line! These two new crosstown routes will skip Downtown to connect people and jobs, running every 30 minutes.

    > WSTA-X North would go from Wake Baptist Atrium Health through the Hanes Mill area.

    > WSTA-X South would go from Salem Gardens to Hanes Mall.

  • HOW TO TAKE THIS SURVEY:

This survey may look long, but do not worry! You do not need to answer every question. You only need to answer the questions about the route/routes that you ride and new services we are proposing in your area.

This survey divides Winston-Salem into 4 areas by geography: northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest. You can jump ahead to the questions about your area.

    • Northeast (Routes 92, 93, 96)
    • Southeast (Routes 86, 101, 104, 105, 108, new WSTA-X South)
    • Southwest (Routes 81, 82, 102, 103, new WSTA-X South)
    • Northwest (Routes 87, 88, 89, 97, 109, new WSTA-X North and microtransit)

On the next page, the survey will begin. Click the area where you ride routes, and questions will be displayed accordingly. Thank you for your participation!

  • Route Maps

Find your bus route and nearby routes on these maps:

    • Northeast (Routes 92, 93, 96)
    • Southeast (Routes 86, 101, 104, 105, 108)
    • Southwest (Routes 81, 82, 102, 103)
    • Northwest (Routes 87, 88, 89, 97, 109)
  • Northeast (NE) Area

Several of WSTA’s highest demand residential areas are in the northeast area, so we are going to run buses more often on some of the most popular routes.

Routes 92 and 96 would increase service from one bus every 60 minutes to one bus every 30 minutes.

Route 93 is proposed to be shortened, eliminating the sections on 10th Street, East 12th Street, Gerald Street, and New Walkertown Road. With this change, we would increase service from one bus every 60 minutes to one bus every 30 minutes.

  • Southeast (SE) Area

In this area, changes are proposed to several routes.

Routes 86 and 105 would increase service from one bus every 60 minutes to one bus every 30 minutes.

Route 101 and 108 are proposed for elimination. At the same time, WSTA plans to introduce a new crosstown service that would run every 30 minutes and cover some of the same territory served by these routes.

    • The south side crosstown route, WSTA-X South, would connect Salem Gardens to Hanes Mall, travelling along Terry Rd SE, Reynolds Park Rd, Waughton St, Thomasville Rd SE, E Sprague St, Old Lexington Rd, Clemmonsville Rd, Brewer Rd, Southpark Blvd, Ardmore Rd, Ebert Rd, London Ln, Burke Mill Rd, Frontis Plaza Blvd, and Hanes Mall Blvd.

Route 104 is recommended to be shortened, eliminating the section along Old Lexington Rd from Teague Rd to Clemmonsville Circle.

Route 81 and Route 103 proposed to increase service from one bus every 60 minutes to one bus every 30 minutes.

Routes 82 and 102 are proposed for elimination. At the same time, WSTA plans to introduce a new crosstown service that would run every 30 minutes and cover some of the same territory served by Route 82.

  • Northwest (NW) Area:

Route 87 is proposed to be shortened, eliminating the section along Germanton Rd and East Hanes Mill Rd.

Routes 88, 97, and 109 are being proposed for elimination.

Route 89 would increase service from one bus every 60 minutes to one bus every 30 minutes.

At the same time, WSTA plans to introduce two new services:

    • The north side crosstown route, WSTA-X North, would run every 30 minutes and go from Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center through the Hanes Mill area, connecting Hanes Mill Rd Walmart, University Parkway, Shattalon Drive, Reynolds Rd, Northwest Blvd, S Hawthorne Rd, Queen St, and Medical Center Blvd.
    • The Northwest Microtransit Zone – a service where you can schedule a ride in a small vehicle to take you anywhere within the Zone, whether that be an address or a bus stop to connect to other WSTA services. How would this work?
      • Example A – a resident who lives along Bethabara Rd works at Atrium Health. They call or use an app on their phone to reserve a Microtransit ride from their home address to the inbound bus stop at Reynolda Rd and Bethabara Park Blvd. They then catch WSTA-X North crosstown bus to Atrium Health.
      • Example B – a senior citizen who lives on Luther Green Rd needs to go downtown. They call or use an app to reserve a Microtransit ride from their home address to Sturmer Park, and then take the 89 or 91 bus to downtown Winston-Salem.
      • Example C – a resident on Cheshire Place Drive referees basketball games at the Fulton Family YMCA. They call or use an app and reserve a Microtransit ride. Since both their home and the YMCA are within the Microtransit zone, the rider gets a door-to-door trip.
