The team is evaluating different STREET CONFIGURATIONS, or ways to organize travel lanes, transit, and public/green spaces along both Welton and Downing. For example, one option could be moving transit from its current location on Welton into space now used for on-street parking, creating additional room for sidewalks, landscaping, and other community amenities.
Because transit has significant influence on how the street functions, the configuration options are grouped by transit type. While each individual option has unique characteristics, the descriptions and diagrams below illustrate the basic elements of each category.

Existing/Planned Rail Replacement
The street remains as it is today, with only RTD’s planned/funded rail replacement, maintenance, access, and safety improvements to the existing light rail. This applies to Welton only.

Side Transit
Transit gets its own space on the side of the street (adjacent to the curb), with vehicle lanes in the center. Depending on the configuration, dedicated transit lanes may be provided on one or both sides of the street. This configuration could apply to Welton or Downing.

Center Transit
Transit gets its own space in the center of the street. Configurations may include one or two dedicated transit lanes. This configuration could apply to Welton or Downing.

Transit in Mixed Traffic
Transit operates within the same travel lanes as general traffic, similar to local bus routes. Transit vehicles travel alongside other vehicles rather than dedicated lanes. This configuration could apply to Welton or Downing.

No Transit
Transit is moved off the corridor to adjacent streets. So, no trains or buses on the corridor. This configuration could apply to Welton or Downing.

Transit Only
Configurations prioritize transit by dedicating the street to just transit, walking, and biking. General traffic (other than emergency and limited access/deliveries) would be removed. This configuration could apply to Welton or Downing.
